COVID-19: EI & Temporary Inocme Support Application

Greetings to all Global Tax Services (GTS) clients!

Large number of clients are experiencing hardships due to COVID-19 crisis that is hitting not only Canada, but the worldwide. In order to help our valuable clients to overcome this hardship, Global Tax Services is sending latest information regarding the available EI information that many people have asked for.

Employment Insurance (EI) generally is a system that provides income replacement for employees who are unable to work due to illness, injury, lay-off and few more other reasons at this time.

  1. EI Regular Benefit

Eligibility

  • Have been out-of-work and without pay for at least seven days in the last 52 weeks
  • Lost your job through no fault-of-your own
  • Have worked for min 700 hours in the last 52 weeks (ON)
  • Have worked for 665 hours in the last 52 weeks (NB)

Required Documents for Application

  • SIN/ Bank Information to receive a benefit/ banking Address
  • Work Permit if SIN starts with 9 (temporary workers)

2. EI Sickness Benefit

Eligibility

  • you’re unable to work for medical reasons
  • Regular weekly earning from work has decreased by more than 40% for at least one week
  • Accumulated 600 hours of work in the 52 weeks before the start of your claim

Required Documents for Application

  • SIN / the applicant’s Address / / Bank Information to receive a benefit
  • Work Permit if SIN starts with 9 (temporary workers)
  • Medical Certificate

3. Emergency Care Benefit (Application starts in April 2020)

  • Since March 15th, One-week of waiting period is waived for those individuals in imposed quarantine to claim EI sickness Benefits.
  • Waiving the requirement to provide a medical certificate to access EI sickness benefits.
  • Emergency Care Benefit provides up to $900 bi-weekly, for up to 15 weeks.

Eligibility

  • Workers, including the self-employed, who are quarantined or sick with COVID-19 but do not qualify for the EI sickness benefits
  • Workers, including the self-employed, who are taking care of a family member who is sick with COVID-19, such as an elderly parent, but do not qualify for the EI sickness benefits
  • Parents with children who require care or supervision due to school or daycare closures, and are unable to earn employment income, irrespective of whether they qualify for EI or not
